What are save the date cards?

Save the date cards are the precursor to invitations, and are almost always used to give guests a heads-up to a special event, such as a baby shower, birthday party or wedding. They are generally sent out well in advance of your invitations, so that the recipients know to keep a particular date open. Many save the date cards will specify the place of the event, in addition to the date and the time. Save the date cards are a must for any special event. These cards, which are generally the size of a postcard or a little smaller, can be created or purchased to match the theme you are using for your special event.

What information is included on save the date cards?

Save the date cards are like miniature invitations. They don't go into as much detail as an invitation does, but they do spell out the basics for the recipient, so that the recipients knows to reserve a certain date and time for the special event that is specified. Generally, save the date cards include the following: type of event (wedding, engagement party, birthday), the date (day, date), the time (beginning-end), and where the event is being held at (someone's home, a rented hall, theater, etc.).

Why should I use save the date cards?

Chances are, you are putting a lot of time and energy into creating your special event, making sure to include everything, coordinating colors and themes, and planning everything well in advance. You are also spending a lot of money on food, decorations, entertainment, rentals, and of course, the invitations. You don't want to go through all of this work and money and wind up with some of it going to waste, do you? Of course not. That is why save the date cards are so important! Invitations go out in advance, but for some people, especially those who will have to make travel and accommodations arrangements in order to be at your event, more time will be needed. Save the date cards ensure that everyone knows very early on to reserve the date for you.
